Black Americans, Civil Rights, and the Roosevelts
Client: FDR Presidential Library, Hyde Park, NY
Budget: $250,000
Franklin (FDR) and Eleanor Roosevelt occupied the White House during the nascent years of the struggle for Civil Rights. FDR had to walk a fine line in negotiations with congress, mostly controlled by southern Democrats. To enact the New Deal, a governmental response to the great depression, FDR had to temper his efforts to enact Civil Rights legislation. The FDR Presidential Library’s goal was to communicate this complex storyline to visitors in a clear, effective, and memorable fashion.
